Butterfly Garden

Have you all seen those advertisements for the Butterfly Garden on TV? Well, we found it at the Learning Railroad, an educational store here in Paducah. The "garden" , which is just the net, comes in the box, and you have to send off for the butterfly larvae. You get 5 worms in a big cup and after a week, they crawl to the top, and form their chrysalid (cocoon). Only 2 of ours lived, but after 5 days they climbed to the top, then after 7 days, they hatched into Painted Lady butterflies. Here are the boys getting them out of the net to set them free. This took a lot for Andrew to even touch a butterfly, b/c he doesn't like to touch worms, or frogs, or anything like his brother does. We put flowers with sugarwater on them and oranges in the bottom of the garden for 2 days then set them free. They were beautiful and the boys liked to watch how they changed and loved it when they hatched!
